Sovereignty League: Nearly 1,000 Jobs Announced to Boost Sports in Burkina Faso

(Ouagadougou, October 13, 2026)

The President of Burkina Faso and Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, met on Monday, October 12, 2026, in Ouagadougou with regional governors and sports officials to provide them with guidance on the implementation of the Sovereignty League. This presidential initiative aims to reorganize the national sports landscape, strengthen talent identification, and promote a more equitable distribution of sports opportunities throughout the country.

Driven by a commitment to revitalize Burkinabé sports, the Sovereignty League seeks to place the regions at the heart of the national sports movement. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Sports, Youth, and Employment, Annick Lydie Djouma PIKBOUGOUM/ZINGUÉ OUATTARA, the Deputy Minister for the Budget, Fatoumata BAKO/TRAORÉ, the president of the special delegation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Roland Achille SOW, a representative of the Burkinabé Employers’ Association, Alassane SIENOU, as well as former international players Charles KABORÉ, Ambassador for Sports, Sibiri Alain TRAORÉ, and Adama GUIRA.

The Regions at the Heart of Talent Scouting

For the President of Burkina Faso, the involvement of the regions is an essential lever for giving Burkinabè sports their own identity and strengthening the public’s attachment to their teams and athletes.

“We must involve the regions because we have decided to give our sports a distinct identity. And that is also how competition is fostered. Without an identity—something to rally around when supporting an athlete or a team—it will be difficult,” he stated.

Under this framework, governors will play a central role in coordinating sports activities at the regional level. In particular, they will be responsible for overseeing the recruitment of coaches, organizing regional championships, and selecting young players to join the teams.

“You bear the primary responsibility. It will be up to you to coordinate the recruitment of coaches, organize regional championships, and select the young players who will join the team,” the Head of State explained.

Nearly 1,000 jobs announced, with a minimum salary of 200,000 CFA francs

The Ligue de la Souveraineté is also expected to generate economic benefits in terms of employment. According to announcements by the President of Burkina Faso, nearly 1,000 jobs will be created as part of this initiative. Each selected athlete will receive a minimum monthly salary of 200,000 CFA francs, along with related benefits.

A media coverage plan for the league is also planned to increase the visibility of the competitions and help promote athletic talent. Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, however, warned against irregular practices and fraudulent arrangements that could jeopardize the project’s implementation.

The Private Sector Is Called Upon to Contribute to Sports Funding

Beyond the government’s commitment, the President of Burkina Faso called on economic operators to participate in the funding and operation of the Ligue de la Souveraineté.

Addressing private-sector stakeholders, he referred to a “voluntary but mandatory contribution at the regional level to support sports,” thereby emphasizing the role expected of businesses in supporting this initiative.

This effort aims to foster a collective commitment to the development of sports and to give regions the means to actively participate in the training and emergence of new talent.

Sports as a Tool for Youth Development

Beyond competition, the Ligue de la Souveraineté aims to offer young people opportunities for self-expression and personal growth through various sports. It is also part of an effort to prevent certain social ills, particularly drug and alcohol use.

For Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, young people are an essential resource in the country’s transformation process. “We cannot build a nation with a youth that is sick, with a youth that is unaware. The Revolution seeks to rebuild our homeland based on our own resources. And the resources we have at our disposal are our youth,” he stated.

The Head of State thus intends to make sports a tool for education, discipline, and the preservation of young people’s physical and mental health. He is counting on sports to contribute to their personal development and education, believing it is necessary to “shape them and keep their bodies healthy so they may have healthy minds.”

Through the League of Sovereignty, Burkinabè authorities are thus demonstrating their ambition to strengthen the organization of national sports, foster the emergence of talent from all regions, and make sports a tool for professional integration and youth mentoring.
