Burkina Faso: A New Sovereignty League to Promote Athletic Talent and Create Nearly 1,000 Jobs

Burkina Faso is poised to take a new step in the reorganization of its sports sector. Through the creation of the Ligue de la Souveraineté, the authorities aim to promote young talent, strengthen the regions’ sporting identities, and create nearly 1,000 jobs, with a minimum announced salary of 200,000 CFA francs per month for each selected athlete.

The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, met on Monday, October 12, 2026, in Ouagadougou with regional governors and several stakeholders from the sports world to present the main guidelines for this new competition.

As part of the Presidential Initiative for the Development and Promotion of Elite Athletes, the Sovereignty League aims to foster the emergence of new talent throughout the country.

Regions at the Heart of the Initiative

What sets this new competition apart is the direct involvement of the regions. In particular, the governors will be responsible for coordinating the recruitment of coaches, organizing regional championships, and selecting young athletes to represent their regions.

For the Head of State, this approach should help strengthen the population’s sense of belonging to their teams and foster healthy athletic rivalry among the regions.

Nearly 1,000 jobs and a minimum salary of 200,000 CFA francs

Beyond competition, the Ligue de la Souveraineté is also presented as an initiative to promote youth employment.

According to announcements by the President of Burkina Faso, nearly 1,000 jobs are expected to be created. Each selected athlete will receive a minimum monthly salary of 200,000 CFA francs, along with related benefits.

A media campaign for the championship is also planned to increase its visibility and highlight the athletes’ performances.

The Private Sector Is Called Upon to Contribute

Funding for this new sports initiative will also rely on the involvement of economic operators. The President of Burkina Faso has thus announced a contribution from the private sector at the regional level that he described as “voluntary but mandatory.”

This mobilization is intended to support the operation of the competition and foster the development of sports nationwide.

Sports as a Tool for Youth Development

Beyond the sporting and economic stakes, the initiative has a social mission. It aims to provide young people with an environment for growth, discipline, and personal development, while helping to prevent social ills such as drug and alcohol abuse.

“We cannot build a nation with a youth that is unhealthy, with a youth that is unaware,” declared the President of Burkina Faso.

Through this reform, the Burkinabè authorities aim to make sports a tool for promoting talent, facilitating professional integration, and rallying youth around national values.
