VIIMSANTÉ: DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY ENABLING PRESCRIPTIONS IN BURKINA FASO

Viewing prescriptions, checking medication availability at pharmacies, and receiving payment amounts via text message: this is the process that ViimSanté now aims to simplify. This app, developed by Burkinabé experts, was officially launched on Friday, October 23, 2026, in Ouagadougou.

Led by Dr. Josué Delma, a pharmacist and health systems expert, and Dr. Nestor Sam, a physician specializing in digital health, the platform aims to streamline the management of medical prescriptions using digital tools.

Available on the Play Store, the app allows patients to create an account and view their prescriptions. They can also present the QR code associated with a prescription at a pharmacy, search for medications available at participating pharmacies, and request a renewal of an expired prescription or prescription form from the prescribing physician.

For partner pharmacies, the QR code or reference number allows them to locate the prescription and dispense the medication. Medication prices are displayed on the platform, and a text message then informs the patient of the amount due.

Access management is also regulated: accounts for pharmacies and health centers are created directly by ViimSanté, while prescribers must be authorized by their institution to issue prescriptions on its behalf.

Technical Advisor Bassirou Saré, representing the Minister of Health, attended the launch ceremony and praised this initiative. However, he urged its developers to ensure the reliability of services, data security, and the confidentiality of medical information.

Through ViimSanté, its developers aim to contribute to the modernization of Burkina Faso’s healthcare system by facilitating access to prescriptions and improving coordination among patients, prescribers, and pharmacies.
