SIAO 2026: Exciting Opportunities That Resonate with the Burkinabè Diaspora

From October 30 to November 8, 2026, Ouagadougou will come alive with the 18th edition of the Ouagadougou International Handicrafts Fair (SIAO). Given its range of activities and innovations, this biennial event serves as a business hub and an investment bridge for the Burkinabé diaspora around the world.

“800,000 visitors expected, nearly 60,000 artisan exhibitors, more than 500 professional buyers, and 350 journalists from 50 media outlets,” these are the key figures for the 18th edition of the Ouagadougou International Handicrafts Fair. In addition, some 50 countries—including Ghana as the guest of honor and the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as special guests—are expected in Ouagadougou.

“African Crafts and Industrialization: Synergies for Better Organization and Promotion of Local Products and Cultural Heritage”—this is the theme of the 18th edition of the SIAO. For Burkinabè living abroad, SIAO 2026 offers several opportunities. First, there are B2B meetings and strategic partnerships. Over the course of 10 days, the B2B sessions will bring professional buyers, creators, and investors together directly. This is a golden opportunity for the diaspora to forge business partnerships, import Burkinabé artisanal expertise, or export the “Made in Burkina” brand to their countries of residence.

Next, there are investment opportunities in processing and semi-industrialization. The transition from traditional crafts to small-scale industry requires capital and expertise. The diaspora can play a driving role by investing in mechanization, packaging, logistics, and enhancing the value chain of local products.

Finally, e-commerce and international distribution present an opportunity. With the digitization of the trade show via the e-SIAO platform, the Burkinabè diaspora can serve as a conduit for the digitization and marketing of artwork, textiles (Koko Dunda, Fasodanfani), and processed goods in international markets.
